Stakeholder engagement is the active management of people or groups who affect or are affected by the project. Communication is one tool for engagement, but it is not the whole activity.

Stakeholder analysis

Stakeholder analysis helps identify interest, influence, attitude, expectations, information needs, and likely impact. The analysis should drive the engagement approach. A high-influence resistant stakeholder needs different handling from a low-influence supporter.

Communication planning

Communication should be purposeful. The project manager should choose content, timing, channel, sender, and feedback route based on stakeholder needs and project risk. More communication is not automatically better; relevant communication is better.

Expectation management

Many project problems come from expectation gaps. PMQ questions may test whether the project manager clarifies scope, tradeoffs, decisions, and consequences rather than promising everything to everyone.
