Success criteria and metrics are what turn the business case from a story into a decision framework. Is the pilot strong enough to expand?
Is the current result acceptable only with more human review?
Does the project need more data before broader rollout?
Has the use case failed to justify continued investment?
The stronger answer usually favors criteria that can guide real choices rather than broad aspirations no one can operationalize.

A healthcare network wants AI support for referral prioritization. A weak success definition says the project should “improve prioritization quality.” A stronger one might define target reduction in review backlog, acceptable false-negative exposure, required human-review path, minimum user-adoption level, and conditions under which deployment would be delayed or narrowed. That creates a usable governance framework.
