PfMP Practice Drills

PfMP practice guidance for scenario reading, calculations, written responses, answer discipline, and readiness checks.

Use this page when you want to move from reading into portfolio tradeoff drills and governance judgment. Practice is strongest after you can explain what is best for the portfolio, not just the individual initiative.

When practice is most useful

  • start with short topic drills after each study block
  • use mixed portfolio sets only after your prioritization and rebalancing logic are stable
  • revisit the Cheat Sheet after each short set, especially when misses cluster around the same portfolio signal

Readiness check

Before you lean heavily on drills, you should already be able to explain:

  • why a portfolio answer is different from a project answer
  • how strategic criteria, capacity, and governance thresholds interact
  • why a locally strong initiative can still be the wrong portfolio choice

If those explanations are still thin, review the Overview or the Cheat Sheet before pushing volume.

What to practice in sets of 10 to 20

Practice focus What you should be testing
prioritization logic whether you can choose based on strategic fit, constraints, and portfolio value rather than local attractiveness
rebalancing decisions whether you can spot when dependency stress, health signals, or strategic change should shift the mix
governance thresholds whether you know when a portfolio decision needs escalation, approval, or resequencing
portfolio health interpretation whether metrics and trend signals actually imply a decision

What to log when you miss

  • Did you optimize one initiative instead of the portfolio?
  • Did you ignore a governance threshold or approval path?
  • Did you miss a capacity, dependency, or risk-balancing implication?

What to do after a weak set

If misses cluster around… Go back to…
prioritization or scoring logic Cheat Sheet and Overview
rebalancing choices the rebalancing and roadmap sections in the Cheat Sheet
portfolio health interpretation the health and metric sections in the Cheat Sheet
threshold or governance confusion the governance section of the Overview

When the same miss repeats twice, stop adding more volume and repair that one decision rule first.
