Continued business justification and learn from experience are two principles that run through the whole PRINCE2 method. What to understand

PRINCE2 does not treat the Business Case as a document written once and then ignored. The justification for the project must still make sense as risks, costs, timescales, and expected benefits change. If justification weakens, the project board may need to redirect, pause, or stop the work.

The learning principle works the same way. Lessons are not just a final report at the end. They should influence the next stage, the next decision, and the next way of working. A repeated issue that is never turned into a lesson is a warning sign that the principle is not being applied.

Foundation questions may ask whether a team should continue, escalate, capture a lesson, or change the approach for the next stage. The stronger answer usually recognizes that the project should not simply continue unchanged when the evidence has shifted.

Example

A stage ends with repeated supplier delays. The team records the delays, but the next stage plan keeps the same review pattern and reporting assumptions. That is weak PRINCE2 behavior. The lesson should influence the next stage controls, not just be noted after the fact.

• Treating the Business Case as fixed once approved.
• Assuming lessons only matter at project closure.
• Continuing because a lot of effort has already been spent.
