PRINCE2 Foundation v7 Controlling a Stage

Controlling a Stage (CS) is the project manager’s main day-to-day control process. Foundation questions here often test whether the scenario is still inside delegated authority or whether an exception path should start.

What to understand

Inside this process, the project manager authorizes work, monitors performance, reviews issues and risks, and takes corrective action as long as the situation remains within agreed tolerances. This is where many routine control activities happen.

The stronger answer usually recognizes that CS is active management within delegation. Once forecasts move outside tolerance, the control path changes and escalation becomes necessary.

Example

A work package is slightly behind but still forecast within stage tolerance. The strongest PRINCE2 answer is usually for the project manager to continue control within the stage rather than escalate prematurely.

Common pitfalls

• Escalating every problem even when tolerances are still protected.
• Forgetting that CS is about managing the current stage, not the whole project strategy.
• Confusing stage control with team-level delivery responsibility.
• Treating corrective action as outside the project manager’s normal role.
